February 9 - Retrospective
Seems about time to do a George Crumb (1929-2022) retrospective, not totally easy, since the works list on Wikipedia is organized by genre, but here goes, re a chronology of what's available on YouTube -- much of this already in our iTunes (sorry! Music!) collection...
Three Early Songs (1947),
Cello Sonata (1955),
Variazioni (1959)....
OK, a start, we'll get back to more... as the rest of the day's listenings are
Frederick Delius (1862-1934) - Air and Dance (1915),
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) - The Lark Ascending (1914),
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) - Symphony No. 7, Op. 131 (1952),
Henry Cowell (1897-) - Sailor's Hornpipe (1952),
George Gershwin (1898-1937) - Lady Be Good (1924): The Man I Love,
Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) - Violin Concerto in D Minor (1940),
Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996) - Symphony No. 1, Op. 10 (1942),
Symphony No. 2, Op. 30 (1948),
Symphony No. 6 in A Minor, Op. 79 (1963 -- yes, looks like a mini-Weinberg festival here, too), and
Steven Stucky (1949-2016) - Double Concerto for Oboe, Violin, and Chamber Orchestra (1985 -- this performance featuring Dorothy Freeman!).
All this tandem to updating the Works site re
