March 18 - Memories and Beyond

With the Springfield High School Class of '75 (Delaware County, PA) memorial page now generously maintained by Virginia Brown, Pat Witchel has expressed a wish that there be brief biographical material on each lost comrade.  As such, here is an initial effort to that end -- all that could be gleaned online by Googling each name with added descriptors...

A Germanwings passenger plane crashed in the French Alps Tuesday, killing all 150 people on board. At least three Americans were on board the plane. The State Department announced that two of those killed in crash were Yvonne Selke and her daughter Emily.
Identified victims were Yvonne Selke of Nokesville, Va., an employee for 23 years at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. in D.C., and her daughter, Emily Selke, a recent graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia. The U.S. government did not identify the third American it said was on the plane.
Yvonne Selke performed work under contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon's satellite mapping office, Booz Allen and the Defense Department confirmed in statements.
"Every death is a tragedy, but seldom does a death affect us all so directly and unexpectedly," NGA Director Robert Cardillo said. "All of us offer our deepest condolences and will keep her family and her colleagues in our thoughts."
Booz Allen's chief personnel officer, Betty Thompson, described Selke as "a wonderful co-worker and a dedicated employee who spent her career with the firm."
Victims of Germanwings Flight 9525:
Passengers from at least 15 countries were aboard the flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Düsseldorf, Germany, including 72 Germans and 35 Spaniards.

[Washington Post, April 12, 2015]

Germanwings Flight 9525 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Barcelona–El Prat Airport in Spain to Düsseldorf Airport in Germany. The flight was operated by Germanwings, a low-cost carrier owned by the German airline Lufthansa.

On 24 March 2015, the aircraft, an Airbus A320-211, crashed 100 km (62 mi; 54 nmi) north-west of Nice in the French Alps.

All 144 passengers and six crew members were killed.

It was the only fatal crash involving a Germanwings aircraft during the company's 18 years in operation.
The crash was deliberately caused by the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, who had previously been treated for suicidal tendencies and declared "unfit to work" by his doctor. Lubitz kept this information from his employer and instead reported for duty. Shortly after reaching cruise altitude and while the captain was out of the cockpit, he locked the cockpit door and initiated a controlled descent that continued until the aircraft impacted a mountainside.
Aviation authorities swiftly implemented new regulations that required two authorized personnel in the cockpit at all times, but by 2017, Germanwings and other German airlines had dropped the rule. The Lubitz family held a press conference in March 2017 at which Lubitz's father said that they did not accept the official investigative findings that his son deliberately caused the crash. As of February 2017, Lufthansa had paid €75,000 to the family of every victim, as well as €10,000 in pain and suffering compensation to every close relative of a victim.

Tom Henderson
Accidental Drowning
News below from Jim McLean
Tom passsed away, via a freak, accident while traveling on the PA turnpike northeast extension approximately 1976 or 1977.
Tom and a close friend (Steve Santoro perhaps -- also deceased for reason unknown) were traveling to the Poconos to stay a family cottage for the weekend.
They pulled car over on turnpike in a very dark spot along the highway.
Tom stepped over guard to get off road while friend remained in vehicle. After an extended period of several minutes, driver got out of vehicle to look for Tom who was not seen and did not respond to voice calls.
Driver could not locate Tom and eventually called for help. Police arrived and found that Tom had tripped over or fallen after stepping over guard rail, rolled down long and steep enbankment apparently banged his head and/or knocked himself out and was found dead/drowned in a shallow stream only couple inches deep.
I was home from college when this happened and heard the news that "Tom Henderson" had died on the news.  To confirm it was "our" Tom, I called a Henderson relative who confirmed it was in fact our classmate.  Tom and I had been friends since elementary school, so this incident weighed heavily on my mind time.
